Christopher Lee Brown, age 36, entered a guilty plea to second degree murder and was sentenced to 180-228 months (15 to 19 years) in prison. Brown entered the plea during a session of Alexander County Superior Court last week.
On October 14, 2020, just before 9am, Alexander County 911 received a call about a shooting that had occurred at a residence on Harbert Mountain Road Church Road in the Sugar Loaf Community. Alexander County Deputies responded and found a female victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso and arm. The victim was 59-year old Cyndee Propst Brown who lived at the residence. She was airlifted but died before reaching a hospital.
Christopher Brown, the suspect, had left the scene armed and in a vehicle. A description of a small gray hatchback vehicle was given to responding officers. Deputies located the vehicle at the intersection of NC Hwy. 16 North and Mount Olive Church Road. The driver (Christopher Brown) refused to stop and led law enforcement on a slow-speed pursuit back to the scene of the shooting. Brown, still armed, was taken into custody and placed in the Alexander County Detention Center and held without bond.
Then Sheriff Chris Bowman said that his department had a number of interactions with the suspect prior to the murder. Bowman said that weapons were seized from the home less than a year before the shooting. The weapons by law, were later returned after Brown had completed treatment for an undisclosed disorder.
