The Wilkes County School System has reached a settlement with the family of a student assaulted inside a locker room three years ago.
Five students at Wilkes Central High School were captured on video assaulting a 15-year-old sophomore.
The settlement totals $90,000, paid by the school system’s insurer Employers Mutual Casualty this past January, three years after the assault happened.
Superintendent Mark Byrd said none of the money came from the school district, but Byrd didn’t know if the settlement increased insurance premiums.
The victim’s father, Javon Miller, said school officials didn’t contact officers about the attack. Miller said his son entered counseling and never returned to Wilkes Central. Three underage students were given six months supervision by the courts.
Two adult students were charged with simple assault. Due to the records being expunged, their possible convictions are not known.
