Peoples Drug Store is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, with a community celebration on November 9th. To commemorate the centennial event, Alexander County Commissioners presented a “Key to the County” to Phil Icard, owner of the store, at their October meeting.
Peoples Drug Store opened on Friday morning, December 17, 1918. Mr. Rowe Campbell owned and operated the pharmacy from the opening date for 13,813 consecutive days.
Years later, Mr. Campbell turned his life’s work over to his son, Mr. Rowe B. Campbell, Jr., who everyone knew as Bucky. Current owner, Phil Icard, started working for Bucky in 1972, and purchased the business upon his retirement in 1990.
Icard invites the public to the store’s 100th anniversary celebration on Friday, November 9 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The grand prize giveaway is a 2018 Ford Focus. Those who completed an entry form throughout the year when filling a prescription are entered into the random drawing. There will also be hourly $100 prizes. The public can also enjoy an old-fashioned soda fountain and other family-friendly activities.
Peoples Drug Store is located at 255 NC Hwy. 16 South in Taylorsville. For more information, call (828) 632-2271 or visit www.peoplesdrugtaylorsville.com.
