Newton Police Charge Teen After Chase That Ended In Crash

A Hickory teen has been charged in connection to a vehicle chase that covered more 20 miles last week.

Kasey Dale Mecimore, age 18 of Hickory, has been charged with felony speed to elude, careless and reckless driving and speeding 15 mph more than the speed limit according to Newton Police.

A Newton Police Officer, on Friday, February 23, observed a blue four-door Honda Civic traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 70 at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was clocked at 102 miles per hour.

Officers chased the Honda from Newton through the city of Hickory over to N.C. Highway 16. The pursuit lasted approximately 18 minutes. Officers chased the vehicle for 23 miles.

The chase ended when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into Golf Carts of Hickory on Highway 16 near Conover. The business was unoccupied at the time according to Newton Police.

Mecimore was treated at the scene by Catawba County EMS as was an 18-year old passenger.

Hickory Police, Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, NC Highway Patrol along with Catawba EMS and the Oxford Fire Department all responded.
