Newton Police responded to what is being called a hoax shooting on Sunday.
Police say a man phoned a non-emergency line, claiming he had shot one person and was going to shoot others inside a home on North Thomas Avenue. During the call, it sounded like multiple gunshots were being fired in the background.
Officers tried to contact anyone else inside the home but didn’t get a response. The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, and the Special Tactics and Response (STAR) Team was sent to the location and were able to reach the residents inside the residence.
Officers say the residents were unaware of the incident, the call, or the caller.
The investigation is active.
On Monday, a number of area schools received threats of an active shooter. The campuses include Hickory High School, Freedom High in Morganton, South Caldwell High School, East Lincoln High School, Kings Mountain High School and Crest High School. All of the reports were false.
