Man Dies At Burke County Prison Facility

Jeffery Riley Hoke Hoke, 53, was found unresponsive in his cell around 5 am Sunday at the Foothills Correctional Facility in Burke County. Staff began life-saving procedures, but Burke County EMS pronounced him dead around 5:45 a.m.

Law enforcement and the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner have been notified and are investigating. The Department of Adult Corrections conducting it’s own investigation.

Hoke was convicted in September 2023 of speeding to elude arrest and larceny of a motor vehicle in Catawba County. After serving three months, he was released to probation in January 2024. His probation was revoked following an arrest in March. A projected release date had not yet been determined at the time his death.
