April 15th is the traditional tax filing deadline, but this year people in North Carolina have some extra time to file and pay without penalty.
Both the IRS and the North Carolina Department of Revenue are providing some relief because of the devastation Hurricane Helene caused in the state.
According to the IRS, everyone in North Carolina filing 2024 individual taxes has a filing deadline of May 1, 2025.
There are various scenarios and extensions people should be aware of and those specifics.
Several other southern states impacted by natural disasters also have extended deadlines, including Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Alabama.
According to the North Carolina Department of Revenue, people will get similar relief.
North Carolinians will not be assessed a late action penalty if they file and pay their NC taxes by May 1, 2025, according to a NCDOR spokesperson.
However, for those who owe state taxes, interest will begin to accrue on any amount not sent by April 16.
Those in the 39 western North Carolina counties including Alexander County and the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina that are subject to the disaster declaration related to Hurricane Helene damage won’t need to pay interest on any money owed until May 2, 2025.
