Hickory Man Sent To Prison For Minimum Of Six Years

June 15, 2023 By Richard C. Gilbert

Javon Dooley

40-year-old Javon Dooley of Hickory, will serve an active prison sentence of six to nine years following his conviction for breaking and entering with admission of habitual felon status. Dooley entered a guilty plea during Catawba County Superior Court on Monday (June 12).

The Honorable Gregory R. Hayes, Superior Court Judge from Catawba County, imposed the terms of the plea arrangement. Dooley’s sentence length was enhanced by his habitual felon status that included prior convictions for possession with intent to sell/deliver cocaine in Catawba County (December 2011), attempted common law robbery in Mecklenburg County (December 2005), and felony breaking/entering in Mecklenburg County (June 2003).

On September 17, 2021, officers from the Hickory Police Department responded to a call for a breaking and entering in progress at a business. Officer Richard Bortnick went to the rear of the building where he observed the defendant exiting through a back door.

When he caught sight of officers, Dooley fled the scene and attempted to scale a chain link fence before he was apprehended. His backpack was found near the rear door of the business along with a screwdriver. The case was investigated by Richard Bortnick of Hickory Police Department.
