The Lady Cougar Softball has won ten state titles. Alexander Central’s 1979 Softball Team won the school’s first. They helped to establish the school as one of the elite programs in the state.
Coach Jean Reid’s team was honored at the Lady Cougars Round II State Playoff Game on Friday night at Central Park.
Coach Reid commented.
“1979 was the last year there was only one state champion with all 1A-4A teams vying for the championship. At the time Alexander Central was a 3A team challenged with playing a 3 game series against the reigning state champion, 4A Cape Fear High School. The series was played on Cape Fear’s home field in Fayetteville. The Cougars prevailed winning in a 3 game series. The final game was played on June 9, 1979. The Lady Cougars returned to Alexander County on June 10th with a Police escort from the County line to the ACHS campus. Crowds lined the the streets of Taylorsville as the State Champions returned home.”
