Newton Police Charge Man With Murder

A man is dead and a suspect has been charged with his murder following a shooting Monday afternoon in Newton.

Newton Police say the incident occurred around 4pm near South Brady Avenue and East A Street. The shooting happened outside a bank, but the bank wasn’t involved in the situation according to a press release. The location is a block away and in sight of the Newton Recreation Center where dozens of children were enjoying the splash pad.

Kelvin Jerome England, age 51 was shot and killed while inside a car. Police have charged 28-year old Bricson Cliffton Lineberger who is being held without bond in the Catawba County Detention Center. A first appearance in court is scheduled for today.

Newton Police have not released any other details.
