Wilkes Woman And Child Killed In Crash

August 12, 2022 By Richard C. Gilbert

A Wilkes County woman and her child were killed in a Surry County crash on Wednesday.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol says the accident was reported shortly before 6am.

A truck driven by Jeffrey McManus, 44, of Purlear, was traveling north on N.C. 601 just south of Dobson when he tried to navigate a curve at a speed which was “unsafe for conditions” according to troopers. The rig, carrying logs crossed the centerline and overturned.

A southbound 2018 Nissan passenger car driven by April Hill, 42, of Dobson, struck the logs. She and her 4-year old son were pronounced dead at the scene.

Charges against McManus are pending.
