Wilkesboro Police has issued the following statement

On Thursday April 10 at 3:05 a.m., two Wilkesboro Police Officers were working off duty providing scene safety with their emergency lights activated for construction crews working on U.S. Highway 421. The Officers observed a pickup truck traveling west towards them at a high rate of speed and on the wrong side of the highway. The speed of the pickup was over 100 miles per hour as it passed the construction area. The officers put out a broadcast to other units in the area and one officer attempted to catch up to the pickup.

Two other police units were on the west end of the town and were attempting to locate the pickup. One officer who was heading east with his emergency lights and siren activated encountered the pickup on U.S. Highway 421 still traveling at a high rate of speed and on the wrong side of the road. The officer stopped his vehicle in the roadway in an attempt to get the pickup truck to stop. The vehicle continued traveling west in the east bound lanes without slowing down. As the pickup truck approached the officer, he moved into the officer’s lane in an attempt to collide with the officer’s vehicle. The officer was able to move his vehicle off the roadway and avoid a collision.

The pickup truck continued west in the east-bound lanes of travel until it met a second officer who was also heading east with his emergency lights activated.

The pickup truck then intentionally swerved at the second officer who was attempting to get off the roadway to avoid a collision. The suspect vehicle collided with the patrol officer who was stopped off the roadway,” Delbert stated. “Fire and emergency medical personnel were called to scene. Both the driver of the pickup and the officer were transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Wilkes for non-life-threatening injuries, and both were released after treatment. A passenger in the pickup truck was evaluated at the scene.
