Victim Identified In Fatal Stony Point Fire

A man is dead and his wife is listed in critical condition after a tragic fire in Eastern Alexander County Tuesday afternoon.

Fire units from Stony Point, Hiddenite, Wittenburg, and West Iredell responded to the blaze Tuesday around 5:30 on Marvin Church Court in Stony Point. 75-year-old David Gaines, who lived in the brick structure was killed. Mr Gaines was confined to a wheelchair according to Alexander County Deputy Fire Marshall Mark Earle. Gaines’ wife, 74 year old Alda Gaines attempted to rescue her husband from the fire and was injured. Mrs Gaines suffered severe burns and was airlifted to a regional medical facility, her condition this morning was listed as critical.

“There is nothing suspicious about the fire” Mark Earle said this morning. He, along with the State Bureau of Investigation and the Alexander County Sheriff’s Office are attempting to determine the cause of the blaze today.
