Two Catawba County Residents Killed In Weekend Accidents

October 25, 2021 By Richard C. Gilbert

A Claremont man was killed in an Iredell County crash on Saturday. 68-year-old Steve Eugene Huffman perished in an accident on NC Highway 150.

The accident occurred at about 5:15 p.m. Saturday (October 23) on N.C. Highway 150 at Pinnacle Lane. An eastbound 2014 Dodge Ram attempted to turn left onto Pinnacle Lane, failed to yield the right of way, and collided head-on with a westbound 2021 KIA Soul. An eastbound 2013 Fiat 500 Abarth rear-ended the pickup truck after the initial collision.

The driver of the Dodge, 24-year-old Kian Oliver Both of Mooresville, was not injured. Mr. Huffman, who was driving the KIA, succumbed to his injuries while being transported by E.M.S. A passenger in the KIA, a 70-year-old Claremont woman, was critically injured and was taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The driver of the Fiat, a 16-year-old male from Maiden, was not injured.
The N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating.

A resident of eastern Catawba County was killed on Sunday at approximately 12:25 am. The N.C. State Highway Patrol responded to Mathis Church Road near Sunset View Lane in Catawba. A 2008 Honda Civic was traveling south and lost control in a curve, ran off the roadway to the left, and collided with a utility pole.

The driver, 27-year-old Ryan Thomas Coots of Catawba, passed away at the scene. Mr. Coots was the only occupant in the vehicle. The initial investigation indicates excessive speed to be a contributing circumstance in the collision.
