Roundabout Coming To Iredell County

September 18, 2026 By Richard C. Gilbert

STATESVILLE – An N.C. Department of Transportation contractor soon will begin converting an Iredell County intersection to a roundabout.

Country Boy Landscaping Inc., of Harmony, earned the $4.9 million contract to convert the U.S. 64 and U.S. 21 intersection in Statesville to a roundabout earlier this year.

The new design connects the intersections of U.S. 21 (Sullivan Road), U.S. 64 (Davie Avenue), Stockton Street and East End Avenue with a single-lane roundabout. The project also includes converting a portion of Sherwood Lane between U.S. 21 and U.S. 64 to one-way traffic, realigning its intersection with U.S. 21 and constructing sidewalks and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant crosswalks to improve safety, accessibility and connectivity.

Contract crews will begin installing temporary traffic signals at the intersection Friday, with work continuing over the next few weeks until the installation is complete.

Some overnight road closures are possible throughout the operation, with daytime lane closures possible from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The contract restricts work during morning and evening rush hours.

Roundabouts reduce congestion and backups typically associated with with traditional signalized intersections, and an NCDOT study of 30 intersections converted to roundabouts found a total crash reduction of 46%. The study found roundabouts reduced fatal and injury crashes by 76%.

The roundabout is expected to open in fall 2027, with all construction expected to end in spring 2028.
