BATON- On Friday, April 24th at approximately 11:49 p.m., The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision on Connelly Springs Road near Baton Church Road, In Caldwell County. A 2013 Ford Taurus was traveling South on Connelly Springs Road at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then crossed the center line and drove off the roadway to the left before colliding with a tree.
The driver of the Ford, Roy James Byrd, 39, of Lenoir, succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the collision.
The initial investigation concluded that speed and impairment were contributing factors in the collision.
Connelly Springs road was partially closed for 1 hour while Troopers conducted the on-scene investigation.
