Conover Woman Gets Long Prison Term For Child Abuse

June 18, 2026 By Richard C. Gilbert

Amy Lynn Gonzalez

A Catawba County woman received a prison sentence of up to a half-century in a child abuse case. 40-year-old Amy Lynn Gonzalez of Conover, has been sentenced to serve 39 to 50 years in prison following her conviction on multiple child abuse offenses involving three young children. The sentence was imposed by Superior Court Judge Sherri W. Elliott after Gonzalez entered guilty pleas to three counts of intentional child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury on Monday, June 15.

The investigation began in February 2025 after concerns were reported regarding the welfare of three children in the home. Deputies with the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office responded and discovered conditions that led to an extensive criminal investigation. Evidence gathered during the investigation showed that the children had been subjected to ongoing abuse, neglect and deprivation over an extended period of time. All three children required significant medical evaluation and treatment.

The defendant was held accountable for her role in causing serious physical and emotional harm to the children. Under the sentence imposed by the court, Gonzalez will spend decades in the custody of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections.

District Attorney Scott Reilly stated, “This case involved the abuse and neglect of some of the most vulnerable members of our community. Thanks to the diligence of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, medical professionals, child protection experts and our prosecution team, these children were removed from a dangerous situation, and the defendant has been held accountable. A sentence of 39 to 50 years reflects the seriousness of these crimes and our commitment to protecting children.”

The investigation was conducted by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit. Assistant District Attorney Jessica Phillips prosecuted the case for the State with assistance from Legal Assistant Dea Crowe. The case against the co-defendant remains pending.
