The Alexander County Library has announced a new policy on late fees to encourage library usage, according to Laura Crooks, Library Director.
No late fees will be charged on books or audiobooks. Late fees on movies and music CDs have been reduced from $1 per day to only 10 cents per day. Checkout periods on books are still one month, and movies are still one week.
Replacement fees are charged for damaged books. Any items that have not been returned after three months are considered lost and the library will charge the replacement price for the item. When lost books are returned in good condition, replacement charges are waived.
“Ending or minimizing late fees removes barriers to service, creates a more welcoming library, and recovers more late or lost items,” said Crooks. “We like to see people in the library, and we like to get our books back. We can do both better with less fines.”
