Alexander County Board of Commissioners Vice Chairman Larry Yoder has been appointed to the Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC) Board of Trustees.
The board of trustees serves as the governing body for CVCC, providing oversight and direction. The board is responsible for hiring and evaluating the college president, managing budgets and facilities, approving academic programs, ensuring the college meets state standards, and more.
Dr. Garrett Hinshaw, CVCC President, emphasized the value Commissioner Yoder will bring to the CVCC Board of Trustees.
“We are honored that Commissioner Yoder has accepted his appointment by the Alexander County Board of Commissioners to the Board of Trustees at Catawba Valley Community College,” said Dr. Hinshaw. “Commissioner Yoder is well respected in the community and has a strong understanding of the mission of our college. His experience and knowledge as a commissioner will add great value to the work of our board.”
Commissioner Yoder said he is excited to be appointed to the CVCC board. “It is a privilege to be appointed to the CVCC Board of Trustees. As a County Commissioner, I have seen firsthand how education and workforce development are vital to the region’s growth and prosperity,” Yoder said. “I look forward to working with my fellow trustees to ensure that CVCC continues to provide high-quality education and training opportunities that benefit students, families, and the region as a whole.”
Commissioner Yoder and his wife, Hazel, live in the Taylorsville community. He is a graduate of Lincolnton High School and attended Western Carolina University, Gaston College, and Catawba Valley Community College. Yoder has served as an Alexander County Commissioner for almost 20 years, from 2004 to 2016 and from 2018 to the present. He has served in numerous other volunteer roles, including the Taylorsville Fire Department, YMCA Management Council, Taylorsville Lions Club, Taylorsville Jaycees, Alexander Central Cougar Club, Brushy Mountain Shrine Club, and Alexander County Recreation Committee. Yoder is also a recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine award.
