Germany Martezz Butler
Germany Martezz Butler, 34 of Monroe, was in the general population area with other inmates when he collapsed on January 12th. Jail staff performed CPR until Wilkes Emergency Medical Services arrived, and assumed care. He was transported to Wilkes Medical Center and pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m.
The SBI is in charge of the investigation.
Wilkesboro Police arrested Butler on February 19, 2023, and charged him with firing several shots while he was in room 420 at the Days Inn on U.S. 421 early that morning. He had been in the Wilkes Jail since.
Butler was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling, possessing a stolen firearm, four counts of injury to real property, discharging a firearm in city limits and misdemeanor possession of marijuana. He had a long and extensive criminal and prison record.
