September 1, 2023 By Richard C. Gilbert

A 2-year-old boy was fatally wounded by an older sibling who found a loaded gun in the family’s vehicle at their home off Fort Dobbs Road near Statesville on Thursday afternoon.

Iredell County Deputies responded to a residence in the 100 block of Fort Dobbs Road in response to a report that a child had been shot around 4:30 p.m.

A neighbor was performing CPR on the child when the first officer arrived on the scene within a minute of being dispatched.

The deputy continued life-saving efforts until Iredell County EMS personnel arrived and transported the child to Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

The child was pronounced dead at 8:32 p.m.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting.
