A two-year-old child has been hospitalized as a result of what has been determined as an accidental shooting. On Sunday (May 2) the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office was called to an address on Old Wilkesboro Road in reference to the shooting. When deputies arrived, they found the victim and provided medical care until medical personnel arrived. The child was taken to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem for additional treatment.
Iredell County Sheriff’s Office and Crime Scene Investigators arrived at the scene. Two individuals were interviewed about the incident. Crime Scene Investigators located the weapon, a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol, along with bullet fragments in the bedroom of the home. Investigators determined the child had gained access to a loaded pistol which was lying on the bed, and the shot was accidental.
Based on the statements and physical evidence from the scene, both individuals have been charged with misdemeanor child abuse and one of the suspects has also been charged with misdemeanor failure to store firearms to protect a minor. The child was last reported to be in stable condition.
