Blackwell pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, two counts of possession of a firearm by a felon, and assault by strangulation. He was sentenced to 127-165 months in prison, or ten years, seven months to 13 years, nine months.
On June 24, 2023, officers responded to a distress call at Iredell Memorial Hospital concerning a victim who had sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach. It was later determined that the shooting occurred at an address on Garfield Street. The victim was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem with life-threatening injuries.
As the investigation progressed, Blackwell was identified as a suspect. Warrants were obtained for his arrest. On July 3, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call regarding a trespasser on Greenbriar Road, outside the Statesville city limits. The individual was apprehended and he who initially refused to disclose his identity. He was later identified as Blackwell.
