Richard C Gilbert’s Election Day Blog

November 3, 2020 By Richard C. Gilbert

Tuesday, November 3rd. Day 308 of 2020

It’s Election Day. I’ve never been one to think that everyone should vote but I think most should, provided they understand the issues and the people running for office

1911: Chevrolet Motor Car Company was founded by Louis Chevrolet and William C. Durant

1957: The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 2. On board is the first animal to enter orbit, a dog named Laika

1975: “Good Morning America” premiered on ABC

1979: Known as the Greensboro Massacre, Five members of the Communist Workers Party are shot dead and seven are wounded by a group of Klansmen and neo-Nazis during a “Death to the Klan” rally in Greensboro

1992: Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton defeats President George H. W. Bush and Independent candidate Ross Perot in the 1992 U.S. presidential election

1994: Susan Smith of Union, SC, was arrested for drowning her two sons. Earlier Smith had claimed that the children had been abducted by a carjacker. The story would garner massive media attention

In the News: Polls open today from 6:30am-7:30pm in Alexander County…Former Commissioner Robertson passes…Big uptick in COVID-19 cases in Alexander County, over 50 cases at the prison…Armed standoff overnight in Iredell County, man shot by deputies…Wilkes County man charged by Taylorsville Police…Alexander County woman facing charges

Weather: Tons of Sun, a little warmer. High around 65 for Election Day

Sports: Tampa Bay survives the G-Men…Panthers eager to get players back…NFL might expand playoffs…NC State gearing for Friday night game

Happy Birthday: Michael Dukakis, Lulu, Larry Holmes, Roseanne Barr, Kate Capshaw, Dennis Miller, Phil Simms, Dolph Lundgren, Karch Kiraly, Tyler Hansbrough, Kendall Jenner

It might be lonely at the polls today with all the early voting

We’ve lost one of our finest citizens. Darrell Robertson who served on the Board of Commissioners for 17 years has passed. He was an asset and advocate for all of us. He was one of those people that dot the i and cross the t, nobody was better prepared. Darrell and I had a number of conversations over the years and I give myself some credit here, I didn’t say much and just listened. Rest in Peace, Darrell was 72

Some people are proving they are what you thought they were, on social media

I’m Richard C Gilbert and I approved this blog

Quote of the Day: “The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter”… Winston Churchill
