Morganton: A bad start and a cold shooting night doomed Alexander Central Friday night at Freedom.
The Lady Patriots led 21-9 after the first quarter and never trailed. Payton Caldwell led Freedom with 24 points. Kirstyn Herman topped the AC scorebook with 17 and Meredith Wike added 12.
Alexander Central shot only 26 percent in the loss that drops them to 16-3 and 2-3 in Northwestern Conference play. Freedom moves to 11-7 and 2-3.

Almost ! The Cougars almost came back from an 18 point deficit with 1:15 left in the 3rd period.
The Patriots were up 38-22 at half and never trailed. ACHS made a major run at Freedom in the final quarter but it ended up a little short.
Freedom made 14 three-point baskets (14-29) compared to 3 of 8 for AC. The Cougars suffered greatly at the free-throw line going 4-14.
Elijah Davidson paced the Patriots with 32 (10-16 from 3) . Chad Lasher led the Cougars with 17 followed by Jayon Connor with 15 and Jaheim Redmond’s 11.
Freedom is now 9-9 and 3-2. Alexander Central drops to 7-12 and 1-4.
