Wilkesboro Police say Lucas Gray Lankford, 23, of Boonville, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection with the incident. Officers responded to a location on US 421 shortly after the noon-hour on Thursday, August 10th.
The victim of the shooting is identified as Mervin Stacy Huffman II, 44, of Boomer. At last report, Huffman was listed in “critical but stable” condition.
Wilkes County Communications Center received a 911 call of a shooting at the U.S. Hwy 421 Exit Ramp and Brushy Mountain Road. When officers arrived on the scene, one person was located in the roadway and suffering from a gunshot wound. Another person who was believed to be the shooter was located at the Run-In Convenience Store a short distance north of the scene on Oakwoods Road.
An automatic handgun and four spent 9mm shell casings were recovered as evidence according to Police.
Lankford is being held in the Wilkes County Detention Center under a secured bond of $250,000.
