Major Traffic Shift Coming to N.C. Highway 16 in Catawba County

October 2, 2021 By Richard C. Gilbert

NEWTON – Starting next weekend, an N.C. Department of Transportation contractor will implement the first of two major traffic shifts on N.C. 16 in Catawba County as part of an ongoing widening project.

Beginning Oct. 9, one of two lanes will be closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on N.C. 16 between Claremont and Tower roads. The median lane will be closed and multiple reduced conflict intersections will be installed.

The second major traffic shift will take place on Oct. 16. The project is expected to be complete by mid-2022.

Motorists should drive carefully in the area and look out for any signage on the route as they adjust to the new traffic pattern.

For real-time travel information, visit DriveNC.gov or follow NCDOT on social media.
