Hikcory: Alexander Central’s women had never won the Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic until 2022. They liked it, so they repeated in 2023 !
The Lady Cougars won the event with a 50-34 win over Fred T Foard on Friday at the Tarlton Center on the campus of Catawba Valley Community College.
Take away the second quarter and Foard out-scored ACHS but that second period not only counted, it was the difference. The Lady Cougars won the period 19-0 ! They led at half 27-10.
It was a cold shooting, turnover filled game, save that second quarter. Meredith Wike found her shooting touch making three shots in the period from beyond the three point arc enroute to 21 point performance that earned her the tournament MVP. Kirstyn Herman added 12 points, 7 rebounds and 6 steals.
Davoney Dellinger paced the Lady Tiger scoring with 11. Foard had 30 turnovers against the scrappy tourney champs.
Alexander Central heads into conference play with a record of 14-0. Foard is 8-3.

Men’s 5th Place Game
South Caldwell 67 Alexander Central 57
The Cougars led 20-14 after the first period but were out-scored 25-11 in the second, it proved to be decisive.
South shot 53 percent compared to the Cougars 35 percent. They made 9 three-point baskets versus just 3 for ACHS.
Connor Setzer led the Spartans with 32 points including 6 of 10 from beyond the arc.
Chad Lasher tallied 21 for the Cougars and Jayon Connor continued his improved play with 19.
The loss drops AC to 6-8, South is 8-5.
