Judge Dismisses Two Charges Against Catawba County Register Of Deeds

A judge dismissed two felony counts against Catawba County Register of Deeds Donna Spencer on Thursday.

The decision to throw-out the counts of embezzlement and obtaining property by false pretenses leaves Spencer facing two charges: one felony count of obtaining property by false pretenses and a misdemeanor count of failing to discharge duties.

The two dismissed counts were tied to questions about Spencer’s compensation.

Spencer was indicted in December, 2021 and remains in the office she has held for nearly 20 years.

Spencer has said she intends to seek office again.

No trial date on the remaining charges has been set.
