Highway Patrol Says Snow-Slickened Roadway Contributed To Fatal Crash On Thursday

March 13, 2026 By Richard C. Gilbert

Laurel Springs – On Thursday, March 12, at approximately 10:44 a.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Alleghany County on NC 18 near NC 113. A 2025 Toyota Rav-4 was traveling North on NC 18 when it ran off the road to the right, struck a culvert and overturned in a creek.

The driver of the Toyota, Richard Lee Goodwin, 72, of Boone, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The investigation does not indicate impairment to be contributing factors in the collision, however exceeding a safe speed due to snow, contributed to the collision.
