Taylorsville: Thud! The emotion of an opening win a week ago came crashing down to a pall-like atmosphere Friday night for the Alexander Central Cougars.
A talented Hickory team took advantage of five AC turnovers and won in a rout. The Red Tornadoes shut-down the Cougar rushing game and romped to a 42-0 lead by halftime.
Hickory QB JB Young threw three scoring-tosses to Ronan Nieland on the visitor’s first three possessions. Rocket Brice returned a punt 34 yards for a score and Jaheim Jenkins had a pair of rushing touchdowns.
For the Cougars, RB Jaquis Parks was targeted by Hickory’s defense and held to 28 yards on 13 carries. He fumbled twice against the quick, swarming Red Tornado defense.
Jonas Henson accounted for the Cougars only score, a 1 yard plunge in the third quarter. It capped an 80-yard, 11 play drive to start the second half.
The Cougars will travel to Ashe County on Friday, September 4th.
