One person was killed in a crash Tuesday night on the U.S. 321 bridge over Lake Hickory.
The deceased is 64-year-old Danny Gray Peacock of Hickory. At approximately 7:20 p.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a collision on the U.S. 321 South bridge over Lake Hickory. The left lane was closed due to ongoing bridge repairs in an active work zone between Caldwell and Catawba counties.
A 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was traveling south, entered the left lane closure, and began passing vehicles that were in the appropriate lane. The Chevrolet collided with a large front-end loader within the lane closure. The driver of the pickup, Danny Gray Peacock, passed away as a result of his injuries at the scene. The 64-year-old operator of the front-end loader was not injured. The initial investigation indicates the contributing circumstances of speed and reckless driving on the part of the driver of the Chevrolet.
