June 15, 2023 By Richard C. Gilbert

Charles David Gilmore Jr

On Friday, June 9th at approximately 12:10 p.m. the Burke County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Investigators identified 33-year old Charles David Gilmore Jr. in the parking lot of Motel 6 at 3454 Miller Bridge Road in Icard. Gilmore had seven outstanding warrants for his arrest out of Alexander, Iredell and Catawba Counties with five of those warrants being for felony charges.

Gilmore was observed getting into the driver’s seat of a blue Volkswagen along with a female passenger and proceeded to pull out of the parking lot onto Old NC 10, traveling toward East Burke Middle School. Narcotics Investigators initiated a traffic stop on Gilmore just before the rear entrance to East Burke Middle School. Gilmore pulled into the rear entrance of the school and began to flee from law enforcement officers in his vehicle.

During the pursuit, Gilmore threw a stolen Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol out the driver’s side of his vehicle while on school property. Gilmore then ran his vehicle through the front gate of the school and turned left onto Miller Bridge Road. One of the occupants of the vehicle threw approximately $7,500 in cash out the passenger side window in front of 3806 Miller Bridge Road.

Deputies and Investigators continued pursuing Gilmore as he led them on a high-speed chase throughout Burke County, until he eventually wrecked his vehicle down an embankment in front of 3101 Icard Grove Avenue.
