FEMA Announces Major Disaster Declaration For Nov. 2020 flooding In Alexander, And Other Counties

March 8, 2021 By Richard C. Gilbert

WASHINGTON — FEMA announced on March 4 that federal disaster assistance has been made available to the state of North Carolina to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by Tropical Storm Eta from Nov. 12-15, 2020. This assistance includes Alexander County, although there is currently no information on how much funding will be available. The county will not receive any money to directly distribute to citizens.

As details become available, Alexander County Government will issue updates. Updates will also be posted at www.fema.gov/disaster/4588. In the meantime, the county continues to encourage those affected by the flooding to apply for assistance through the State of North Carolina Individual Assistance program (more information below).

President Joe Biden’s approval of the disaster declaration makes federal funding available to the state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by Tropical Storm Eta in the following counties: Alexander, Alleghany, Ashe, Beaufort, Burke, Caldwell, Davidson, Davie, Duplin, Edgecombe, Hertford, Iredell, Robeson, Rowan, Sampson, Stokes, Wilkes, Wilson and Yadkin.

Federal funding will also be available on a cost-sharing basis for hazard mitigation measures statewide. Additional designations may be made at a later date if warranted by the results of damage assessments.

Here is information regarding the State of North Carolina Individual Assistance program, which provides state-funded grants to those affected by the flooding. Applications for state assistance will be taken via telephone at 919-825-2378 or email IArecovery@ncdps.gov.
