A man was killed in a weekend crash in Catawba County. On Saturday (April 30) at approximately 6:25 p.m., the North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to Mount Pleasant Road near Little Mountain Road. A 2005 Suzuki XL-7 was traveling south on Mount Pleasant Road, crossed the centerline, and collided head-on with a northbound 2006 Nissan Altima.

The driver of the Suzuki, a 36-year-old Sherrills Ford man, received serious injuries and was transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He was not restrained by a seatbelt. The driver of the Nissan, 67-year-old Kevin Lee Johnson of Sherrills Ford, passed away at the scene as a result of his injuries.

Mount Pleasant Road was closed in the area for approximately three hours during the on-scene investigation. Charges are pending the ongoing investigation.
