Watauga 21
Alexander Central 7
Watauga continued their recent domination of Alexander Central Friday night in Boone, 21-7.
The Cougars dropped their third straight game to the Pioneers as the AC offense continued their early season woes. They’ve scored only a single touchdown in two games. Watauga’s offense was no “show on turf” either as they were actually out gained by the Cougars 208 to 155. Watauga was able to turn a pair of ACHS turnovers into 14 points.
Watauga drew first blood with a 69 yard run by Sebastian Best with 5:34 remaining in the opening quarter. They would score again on a 51 yard interception return before the first quarter ended. The Pioneers would take advantage of a Cougar fumble and march into the end zone early in the third period and it was 21-0 early in the third quarter.
The Blue and Gold put together a 59 yard drive in 10 plays later in the third period. Quarterback Lance Justice crossed the goal line from 4 yards to make it 21-7.
Alexander Central struggled at crucial moments on defense including several penalties that kept the ball in the hands of Watauga.
Dayante Calhoun led the Cougar offense with 58 yards on 13 carries. Ryheem Craig had 10 tackles to lead AC’s defense.
The loss sinks Alexander Central to a most disappointing 0-2. They will host Freedom next Friday.
