Conover Man Charged With Shooting His Son

A father from Catawba County has been arrested and charged with shooting his son.

Mark Jefferson Benge, age 55, Noah’s Path, Conover, is charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. Arrest records reveal that Benge allegedly shot his adult son with a 9mm handgun.

According to a press release by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office “Deputies arrived and located the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The suspect remained on scene and was taken into custody without further incident. The victim was airlifted to an area hospital and remains in stable condition.”

Benge is being held without bond in the Catawba County Jail. He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance on Monday in Newton.
