Chuck Cannon
Cannon has been the school’s athletic director since 2019 and assistant varsity football coach since 2017.
Ron Turner resigned from the post on January 12th. His head coaching mark over nine seasons in Moravian Falls was 57-41.
“I am humbled and honored to have the opportunity to continue building on the great work coach Ron Turner and coach Jeremy Funderburk established at Wilkes Central over the past several years,” said Cannon in a statement released by the school.
“It is also a great honor to continue the great tradition of Eagles football that other legendary coaches, such as Marvin ‘Red’ Hoffman, Richard Grissom, Buzz Sims, Jerry Minton and others, have fostered along the way.”
Just prior to his tenure at Wilkes Central, Cannon served as head football coach at Hibriten High School in Lenoir for 11 years, winning four league titles, making the state playoffs eight straight seasons and reaching the regional finals.
Over his 36-year career, Cannon has also coached football at South Caldwell, Freedom, Mooresville, East Burke and Bessemer City high schools.
Wilkes Central returns to Alexander Central’s Football schedule this fall. The Cougars will visit the Eagles on August 25th.
