Attack Reported At Hickory Hospital

More details on a story reported on Sunday. It was reported on this website that a Newton man had been charged with attempted murder.

On Monday, Hickory Police said the assault took place at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Joseph Lee Rosales, 22, was taken into custody on Friday by Hickory Police. According to a published report, Rosales allegedly attacked a fellow psychiatric patient at the hospital. The attack is said to have taken place  in the psychiatric area of Catawba Valley Medical Center. Rosales struck and strangled the other patient and at times placed the person in a chokehold.

Rosales had been in the hospital because of various mental health problems.

The assault occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Friday, according to a statement from the hospital. Hospital police officers initially responded to the attack and were later joined by Hickory officers.

Rosales is expected to be moved to another facility.

Hickory Police says the victim is in stable condition.
