The Alexander County Board of Education has agreed to award Bar Roofing of Kernersville the contract for a roofing project at Bethlehem Elementary School. The board held a special called meeting Monday, May 1st to consider the bids. Last May, the state awarded the district a 1.35 million dollar grant from needs-based school capital funding for the project. Bethlehem Elementary School has layers of roofing on the building, so the new company will need to remove those and then place on the new ones. Because of the multiple layers and their weight, it was not an option to simply place a new roof on top of the existing one. The district is required to fund 5%, or more than $48,000 of the project from local money and has asked the county commission to help.
Bar Roofing was the low bidder of the three companies. Nelson Hollar of Wolf Trail Engineering will help shepherd the project. He told board members that Bar Roofing is a good company to work with and recommended them for the work. The board approved the recommendation unanimously.
The manufacturer’s warranty on the roof is for 20 years.
Vice Chair Robert Arguelles was not present for the meeting.
