The Cougars traveled to Hickory and showed that the game of football can still be won on the ground.
Alexander Central rolled up 333 yards on the turf and 358 overall at Dave Elder Filed at Frank Barger Stadium Friday night. The Cougar ground attack frustrated Hickory and put the game away in the 4th quarter with a pair of touchdowns.
AC Quarterback Tanner Moore rushed for 156 yards on 12 carries. He ran for 3 touchdowns from 4, 67 and 35 yards. He also passed for a score hitting Garison Millspas from 3 yards. Fullback Logan Shoemaker had 78 bruising yards on 19 carries and Robert Young gained 72 on 10 tries.
Hickory was led by QB Brady Stober who went 17-28 covering 195 yards and a touchdown. Dashawn Medley caught 9 passes for 70 yards. Isaiah Lackey picked up 76 on the ground for the Red Tornadoes.
The Cougar ground attack controlled the time of possession 30:57 to 17:03.
ACHS coach Butch Carter said after the game “We just kept pounding them and Tanner played great. We’re banged up with dinks and dings, typical football stuff, but we really needed this. I’m proud”
Nate Erkman and Mason Chapman-Mays had 6 tackles to lead the AC defense.
Alexander Central will host North Gaston on Friday, August 26th while Hickory heads to South Caldwell.
