Alexander Central 41 Ashe County 35 OT
Taylorsville: Alexander Central rallied from down 8 with six minutes remaining to force overtime and win their Northwestern Conference opener Friday evening.
Ashe County led 35 to 27 in the fourth quarter. The Blue and Gold marched 70 yards in 11 plays and lost their starting quarterback briefly. Number two QB Wade Queen threw a laser to Garrison Millsaps from 13 yards with 54 seconds remaining in the game.
Stating QB Tanner Moore returned and grunted his way into the end zone for a two point conversion to knot the game at 35.
Ashe County had the initial possession of overtime. Huskies QB Blake Peters had a pass picked off by Cougar linebacker Chad Lasher setting up the winning score.
Sawyer Chapman-Mays plowed his way into the north end zone from 7 yards to give the Cougars the dramatic win.
Ashe QB Blake Peters threw for 348 yards and 5 touchdowns.
Alexander Central QB Tanner Moore rushed for 173 yards on 22 carries including a 61 yard romp in the third quarter. Sawyer Chapman-Mays had 126 yards rushing.
Ashe County is now 4-2 and 0-1 in NWC play.
Alexander Central improves to 3-3 and 1-0.
