Statesville: Alexander Central survived a game dominated by the defenses Friday night.
The home standing Statesville Greyhounds took the opening kick and fumbled on the first play. The Cougars marched 52 yards in 7 plays capped by a 33-yard scoring toss from QB Tanner Moore to Jamison Rowe. Carson Davis added the P.A.T. and AC led 7-0 with 4:05 left in the opening period.
Both teams struggled on offense for the remainder of the first half although the Cougars had several chances to add to the lead but they were turned back by Statesville. The half came to a close with ACHS on top 7-0.
Alexander Central mounted a drive deep into Statesville territory led by the QB Moore in the third quarter. He would sustain an injury and left the game. Backup QB Wade Queen moved the Cougars inside the Greyhound 20. He would fumble and Nyquarius Faulkner scooped up the loose ball and run to the end zone from 70 yards. The conversion attempt failed with the visitors from Taylorsville still leading 7-6.
Sawyer Chapman-Mays, who led the Cougar Rushing attack with 46 yards scored from three yards with 2:21 remaining in the game to provide the winning margin.
Alexander Central out gained Statesville 187 to 67 and dominated the time of possession 32:45 to 15:04.
Braydon Rowe led the AC defense with 6 tackles. Chad Lasher added 5 stops including a sack to end Statesville’s last possession.
Alexander Central will travel to Wilkes Central next Friday night while Statesville will host Lake Norman.
