Taylorsville: Defending State 4A champion Providence held off an Alexander Central rally to win 3-2 Friday night at Bob Gryder Stadium.
The Panthers scored a run in the opening inning after a leadoff double followed by a passed ball and a wild pitch.
ACHS would tie the game in inning 3 on a fielders choice.
Providence would plate a pair in the 5th inning and carried a 3-1 into the home-half of the 7th.
The Cougars loaded the bases with one out and scored a run when Sawyer Chapman-Mays was hit by a pitch. The final two batters of the game struck-out to end the rally and Providence survived despite 5 errors.
Both teams managed only 3 hits each.
Alexander Central finishes the season at 21-7. The win puts Providence into round III at Northwest Guilford who beat West Forsyth 7-1.
