Wilkes County Mishap Claims Life Wednesday Morning

September 18, 2024 By Richard C. Gilbert

On Wednesday, September 18, at approximately 9:40 a.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Wilkes County on Greenhorn Road near North Lomax Road. A 2005 Chevrolet Impala was traveling west on Greenhorn Road, when the driver lost control, crossed the center line, drove off the left side of the road, and struck a tree.

The driver, Kayla Mae Combs, 27, of Elkin, succumbed to her injuries at the scene. Combs was not restrained by a seatbelt.

The initial investigation indicates excessive speed for the conditions to be the contributing circumstance in the collision. During the on-scene investigation, Greenhorn Road was closed in the area for approximately one hour.
