Wilkes County Head-On Collision Results In Death

January 18, 2024 By Richard C. Gilbert

Wilkesboro – On Thursday, January 18, at approximately 9:50 a.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Wikes County on Champion Mt Pleasant Road near Conley Shumaker Road. A 2003 Toyota Camry was traveling north on Champion Mt Pleasant Road and collided head-on with a southbound 2006 Freightliner M2 box truck.

The driver of the Camry, Cameron Mark McNeil, 57, of Ferguson, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the box truck, Gary Lee Billings, 48, of North Wilkesboro, was taken to Wilkes Medical Center, with minor injuries.

Champion Mt Pleasant Road was closed in the area for over three hours during the on-scene investigation. The initial investigation does not indicate impairment to be a contributing factor. Upon completion of the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Wilkes County District Attorney’s Office, charges are pending.
