During the Tuesday April 16th meeting of the Wilkes County Board of Commissioners, the vote was 4-1. Greene, the fifth member of the all Republican Board voted no. He did step down as Board Chairman on March 19th.
In March, social media posts implied Greene was arrested in 2001, at a dog fight in New Jersey. He was one of over 40 people charged. Greene says the charge against him was dropped.
Officials say Greene can’t be legally be forced out of office.
Calling Greene a distraction, Board members at the Tuesday meeting issued a statement:
“Due to recent controversy concerning Commissioner Greene, it has become extremely difficult for the Board of Commissioners to devote its undivided attention to those issues which our citizens expect us to work on for the betterment of the county. Unfortunately, this controversy has been a distraction for the board and staff and an impediment to good government. For these reasons, we feel it would be in the best interest of the county to respectfully request that Commissioner Greene consider resigning, and accordingly I make a motion that we request Commissioner Greene to resign from the Board of Commissioners for the good of the county and for the good of the board.”
Greene has said he has no intention to resign.
