Wilkes County Collision Claims Life

November 27, 2024 By Richard C. Gilbert

RONDA – On Monday, November 25, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Wilkes County on Clingman Road at Bethel Road. A 2008 Chevrolet Equinox traveling west on Bethel Road, attempted to turn left from a stop sign onto Clingman Road and turned in front of a northbound 1990 International dump truck.

The driver of the Equinox, David Edward Wolfgang Sr., 55, of Jonesville, was critically injured and transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Wake-Forest Baptist Medical Center, in Winston Salem, where he succumbed to his injuries on November 26. He was not restrained by a seatbelt.

The driver of the dump truck, Aubrey Lee Billings, 53, of Traphill, was not injured.

The initial investigation does not indicate impairment or speed as contributing factors and no charges will be filed in this case. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately two hours.
