Victim Identified In Alexander County Fire

A Taylorsville woman died Sunday morning in a fire in the Sugar Loaf Community north of Taylorsville.

Sugar Loaf, Taylorsville and Vashti Fire Departments were called shortly before 10am to a mobile home structure in the Frank Smith Mobile Home Park off NC Highway 16.

Alexander County Fire Marshall Mark Earle says that 80-year old Elinor Martin died in the fire. Two dogs and a cat also perished in the blaze that started as the result of a faulty extension chord. Earle says that Martin lived at the residence with her son, his wife and a child. The other family members were not at home at the time.

Martin was found on her bed with a walker nearby.

The Red Cross is assisting the surviving famiy.
