Taylorsville Woman Shot, Newton Man Killed By Police

A Taylorsville woman was shot this morning and a Newton man has been identified as the gunman by Newton Police.

Around 12:35 am, Catawba County 911 received a call from 38-year-old Heather Renee Clanton of Taylorsville. She stated that she had been shot in the parking lot of the County Magistrate in Newton. She had left that location but was found by Newton Police in the parking lot of the nearby Planet Fitness on Northwest Boulevard.

Officers and EMS was in the process of assisting Clanton when a vehicle entered the parking lot and opened fire. Newton Police Officers returned fire and fatally shot 33-year-old Jamar Franklin Robinson of Newton. He was later pronounced dead.

Clanton was airlifted to a regional medical facility and has now been upgraded to stable condition. Clanton and Robinson were known to each other according to investigators.

The Newton Police Officers that fired their weapons have not been identified and are on administrative leave pending a full investigation which is now being spearheaded by the NC SBI.
